Meet Denil Castillo, West Ham target who left home at 10 and rebuilt career after Ukraine ordeal
West Ham United are looking to bolster their midfield ranks ahead of their Championship return.
As a result, FC Mitdjylland midfielder Denil Castillo is a player of interest to the Hammers.
The 22-year-old is coming off the strongest season of his career in Denmark and was also included in Ecuador’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
West Ham themselves are looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, after their worst fears were realised on the final day of last season.
They are yet to get too active in the transfer window, but have had one sale sealed in Mateus Fernandes, who has joined Tottenham for £85million.
And as the reset begins under Nuno Espirito Santo, West Ham Zone takes a look at the latest to join the list of targerts.
West Ham interested in Denil Castillo transfer - who is he?
According to Ecuadorian outlet El Diario, West Ham are considering Castillo as they assess midfield options following relegation to the Championship.
Castillo made 46 appearances in all competitions for Midtjylland during the 2025-26 campaign, recording six goals and six assists.
With an impressive attacking return for a midfielder who regularly operates in a deeper position, his performances earned him a place in Ecuador’s World Cup squad.
Castillo did not feature during the tournament, but his involvement provided further evidence of his growing reputation.
West Ham target has had a remarkable path - his dream could be in sight
Castillo left his family home at only 10 years old to pursue a career in football and later developed in the academy system at LDU Quito.
His father died four years later, leaving Castillo determined to support his mother and brother.
The midfielder moved to Europe with Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023, but his arrival coincided with the club operating under extremely difficult circumstances because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
With this in mind, he has previously spoken about hearing explosions and struggling with the uncertainty surrounding life in the country.
A loan move to Partizan Belgrade followed before he joined Midtjylland permanently in 2024.
Standing at approximately 6ft 2in, Castillo can play as a holding midfielder or in a more adventurous box-to-box role. His height and physicality are obvious strengths, but Midtjylland have also praised his speed and ability to make forward runs into the penalty area.
The 22-year-old remains under contract with Midtjylland until 2031, meaning the Danish club would be in a strong negotiating position should the Hammers decide to firm up their interest.
The midfielder has openly named the Premier League as one of his major career ambitions.
West Ham cannot offer that immediately following their relegation, but they could provide Castillo with a prominent Championship role and a potential route into the English top flight.
