Maxwel Cornet transfer: West Ham wage update shared ahead of Serie A switch

West Ham United are set to pay the “majority” of Maxwel Cornet’s wages during his loan deal with Serie A side Genoa, according to Sean Whetstone.

The Hammers insider shared an update on the transfer of the Ivorian via his personal X account (20 January) and added that the London Stadium outfit want him to get more game time after his stint with Southampton was terminated.

The deal is set to last until the end of the 2024-25 season, with the attacker looking to get his career back on track.

“Hammer Maxwel Cornet arrives in Italy to complete his loan move to Genoa with West Ham paying the majority of his wages to get him game time in Serie A,” he wrote.

“A new six-month loan after the loan deal with Southampton was terminated.”

Maxwel Cornet needs to find his confidence again before his return to West Ham

The next six months of Cornet’s career could be a defining moment in how it’s set to pan out.

The attacker was brought to the London Stadium in 2022 for a fee worth around £17.5million [Sky Sports] and hasn’t managed to make as much of an impact as many expected him to.

He’s been bounced around a couple of clubs over the last couple of years, and even though the Saints are relegation threatened, neither Russell Martin or Ivan Juric saw enough in him to grant him a regular role in their set-ups.

While it may feel like all hope is lost for the Ivorian, this could act as last-chance saloon if he wants to make it back to the Premier League one day.

Although Genoa are far from the best side in Serie A, should he manage to perform to a decent standard and contribute to a decent amount of goals, it’s hard to see why Graham Potter wouldn’t at least give him a chance in pre-season to prove his worth before the 2025/26 campaign kicks off next time around.
