Max Kilman contract update emerges at West Ham United as Premier League ‘loophole’ closed

West Ham United will mark down Max Kilman’s £40million price tag over the course of five years at £8million, according to Sean Whetstone.

Reporting via the West Ham Football X account on Sunday (7 July) he confirmed that the Hammers wouldn’t be able to amortise the deal over the defender’s seven-year contract after the Premier League closed a “loophole”.

Clubs within England’s top flight can now only spread the cost of a transfer over a maximum of the first five years of a player’s contract, whereas in the past teams were able to do it for the entirety of a deal.

Writing on X, Whetstone said: “West Ham will write down the cost of Max Kilman over five years at £8m per year and not his contract length of seven years.

“New Premier League regulations forbid amortising a player over seven years. Players like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Mykhailo Mudryk and Nicolas Jackson were all offered deals of eight years or longer by Chelsea.

“This meant Chelsea only had to register £12.5m of Caicedo’s £100m transfer fee every year in their financial records.

“This loophole has subsequently been closed in both PSR and FSR – the maximum number of seasons you can spread the cost of a transfer over is now five.”

How much did Max Kilman cost West Ham United after Wolves transfer?

While financial fair play isn’t an issue for West Ham this summer with Tim Steidten himself confirming the Hammers didn’t have to sell to buy players, this is some smart business from those in charge at the London Stadium.

Rather than fork out a massive transfer fee in one big deal this summer, the Irons have instead balanced the payments over the next couple of years to ensure that they remain within any restrictions imposed by the Premier League.

Hopefully, this will be continued if and when Julen Lopetegui and Steidten make further additions to the playing squad between now and the close of the transfer window as it massively reduces the immediate impact of big-money signings.

On top of that, this sort of structure could well allow the Hammers to do more business than they initially expected this window as they won’t have to pay tens of millions of pounds immediately when they recruit a new player.

With Lopetegui admitting that he wants to revamp the playing squad left behind by David Moyes last term, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a few more new faces through the door before competitive fixtures get underway.
