Matheus Nunes not interested in West Ham United move amid £29.5m transfer bid

David Moyes has confirmed that West Ham made a bid for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, but the player has rejected the transfer.

It was reported on Friday morning [August 12] by Record that the Hammers had made a £29.5m bid for the Brazilian that was rejected, with the club holding out for £42.5m.

But speaking in his pre-game press conference, Moyes confirmed that a bid was made but revealed that the player isn’t interested in the move and the club are moving on to other targets.

“We bid for him but the boy chose not to come,” he said.

“We are trying to add players that can make us competitive and try and put us near the top of the league. We want good quality players.”

Shame

Once again West Ham have been turned down after making a move for a player that many probably consider to be out of our range, but it’s encouraging.

The club have moved for several players in recent times that have opted to go elsewhere, including the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez most recently to Liverpool.

But it shows the ambition of West Ham as a club and it shows just how good the recruitment department are that they can identify these players so early to give the squad an advantage.

Midfield is a position that needs strengthening as the team is currently short on numbers following the retirement of Mark Noble and Alex Kral’s loan being terminated.

Unfortunately it seems that Nunes won’t be that man to fill the void this summer, but fans can take plenty of encouragement and joy from the level of target the club want to bring in to bolster the squad.

These things happen in football and while it’s never nice to hear someone turned the club down, we’re big enough to get on with and bring in some quality that does want to be here.
