Mateus Fernandes' West Ham exit could now be on the horizon.

For weeks, the Portuguese midfielder has looked the most likely of the Hammers' major stars set to quit the London club first.

Fernandes joined the Irons for £40million from Southampton in the summer of 2025 and in just one year, has doubled in value.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham are chasing the 21-year-old, with West Ham refusing to back down on their £80million asking price.

Spurs have been the frontrunners over the past few days, showing more willingness to meet the Irons' valuation.

And now, there may be even fewer room for negotiation amid the latest reports on Fernandes' future.

Why West Ham hold the cards in Mateus Fernandes transfer saga

West Ham have held their position strongly over Fernandes, and it appears that will ultimately work out for the Irons.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, "Spurs are in advanced talks" with Fernandes over a move.

However, the report from Jacobs also shares that: "An incoming £90m shareholder cash injection is likely to leave West Ham in a stronger negotiating position."

West Ham is now even more likely to maintain their current valuation for the Portuguese international.

Negotiations may not even be needed, as previously it was said that Tottenham were ready to match what West Ham want in order to beat Man United in the race.

With the new financial year around the corner, it is also expected for the deal to start gaining momentum in the next few days to weeks.

An official bid has yet to be sent but you would expect once talks with the player are over, then an offer will land on West Ham's desk.

Where would the £90m cash injection leave Jarrod Bowen?

With the shareholders putting £90m into West Ham, and that having a positive impact on Fernandes' talks, the same could be said for Jarrod Bowen.

The Hammers have even less reason to allow their captain to depart from E20 now and will not be forced to sanction a sale.

With West Ham wanting Bowen to remain to help push them back into the Premier League, an exit only seems likely for one reason.

If Bowen requests to personally leave London Stadium, they may allow that possibility as a goodwill gesture for his years of service.

Nonetheless, news of the shareholders' decision means that the East London club are in a better position to avoid being plucked apart for their top stars.

And they could enter the 2026-2027 season with a strong base of a squad as they eye a Premier League return.
