Martin Allen mocks Edson Alvarez transfer speculation after West Ham debacle

Edson Alvarez potentially leaving West Ham United for AC Milan this month led to a jibe from Martin Allen on social media.

The former Hammer posted on X (4 January) in response to a Hammers fan who said that Alvarez was “meant to be going to AC Milan” in the wake of the Mexican’s disastrous display against Manchester City.

Alvarez was guilty of “ducking out” of a defensive header in the build-up to City’s opening goal in their 4-1 victory on Saturday, leaving Allen bewildered that Milan could be interested in signing him [Daily Mirror, 8 October].

Allen said: “Going to AC Milan… Really? As (the) kit man, or in the ticket office?”

Edson Alvarez slammed amid West Ham exit speculation

The old footballing proverb of “I’ll drive him there myself” will have been said by many a Hammers fan upon watching Alvarez’s display at the Etihad, and hearing of the reports linking him with a January exit.

Alvarez is far from the only Irons player whose form seems to have deserted them this season, with Mohammed Kudus never seeing eye-to-eye with Julen Lopetegui, to the point of seeking a departure [GiveMeSport, 6 December].

Having arrived at the London Stadium alongside former Ajax team-mate Kudus in the summer of 2023, Alvarez’s displays in claret and blue this term haven’t warranted interest from the likes of Milan.

The Serie A side proposing a swap deal involving ex-Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek may entice the Hammers into granting Alvarez a move, as Lopetegui continues to struggle with midfield balance.

Alvarez’s form being worse than most this term does point towards an exit this month, but it’s hard to fathom why a team competing across multiple fronts in Italy and Europe would still be interested.

In other West Ham news, the Irons’ defeat at the Etihad will have been bittersweet for a club legend who was spotted in the crowd.
