Manchester United update emerges in West Ham United and Tottenham transfer race for Ivan Toney
West Ham United and Tottenham are now the frontrunners in the race to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer, according to Football Transfers.
The outlet reported on its website on Monday (6 May) that Manchester United have begun to explore alternative options as Ineos are concerned as to whether or not the England international suits the Red Devils.
That leaves the Hammers and Spurs in the running for his signature and the two Premier League rivals are ready to “battle” for the striker and are preparing to offer the Bees a transfer fee of around £50million.
West Ham are keen to prepare for the potential departure of Michail Antonio this summer and even if the Jamaican international is to stay at the London Stadium, the Irons would be keen to secure an upgrade.
Will West Ham United sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney amid Tottenham interest?
West Ham have needed a new number nine for a long time now. The Hammers thought they’d finally got their man with Gianluca Scamacca but the Italian struggled in England and this season they’ve relied on Jarrod Bowen’s goals.
While the Englishman has been incredibly consistent so far this term, he isn’t a genuine number nine. He can deputies in that role, but he doesn’t have what it takes to single-handedly fire a team into the European places.

Toney has shown in his brief Premier League career so far that he is more than capable of being that man. £50million is a lot of money to spend on a single player, but the England international guarantees goals.
Whether the project at the London Stadium will be a more attractive proposition than Ange Postecoglou’s work at Spurs remains to be seen. So much could hinge on who is in the Irons’ dugout when the transfer window rolls around.
