Manchester City to pay West Ham United after new transfer developments

Manchester City are in transfer fee talks with West Ham United as they prepare to complete the signing of Divin Mubama, according to The Athletic.

The report (15 August) indicates that compensation is due to West Ham as Manchester City get ready to complete a deal in the wake of his departure from the club.

It comes after stories emerged earlier this summer that the Hammers would go to a tribunal over his compensation after he rejected a contract extension (Sean Whetstone, 28 May).

A young exit for West Ham

All the way back at the start of last season, it looked like Mubama could be set for a run in the first team. The hopes for his future, understandably, were high. Unfortunately, the 19-year-old just hasn’t been able to carve out the path he desired. The forward has been overshadowed by a string of imposing first-team stars in the last few years.

The reason for the compensation is due to him leaving before the age of 24. At Manchester City, though, there are certainly questions as to how far he’ll be pushed. He’ll likely train initially with the under-21s, but will hope that Pep Guardiola sees enough in him to earn a promotion.

As for the boys from London Stadium, this is a tricky one. He was seemingly good enough to be offered a new deal last year, but now, he’s surplus to requirements. Julen Lopetegui has said and done the right things so far, but you have to wonder if the club’s previous transfer strategy might have been at the expense of nurturing exciting academy stars.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have now sanctioned the exits of three first-team players after a transfer development over the weekend.
