Man United make approach to sign West Ham United star Edson Alvarez, £50.7m could seal deal

Manchester United have made an approach to sign Edson Alvarez from West Ham United this summer, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Writing on his personal X account (22 June), the Sky Sports Germany journalist reports that the Mexico international is not deemed unsellable despite the Hammers’ reluctance to see him leave during the transfer window.

And the 26-year-old could be available for between £50.7million and £67.6million, with Manchester United having already made contact and gathered information on the player who Erik Ten Hag is a big fan of.

However, the journalist was clear that there is no offer yet on the table and no agreement between the clubs or with the player for personal terms.

West Ham United face battle to keep top stars this summer

During the summer window last year all the talk was about the future of Declan Rice, and when he left all the attention turned to incoming deals.

However, this summer there is a big mix between outgoings and arrivals with Julen Lopetegui keen to put his stamp on the squad while also ensuring that a host of top players aren’t moved on.

There has been speculation about the futures of Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd [Hakim Zhouri, 11 May], Jarrod Bowen [Telegraph, 23 May] and Mohammed Kudus as well as Alvarez, but the team obviously cannot afford to lose them all and decisions will need to be made.

Ten Hag worked with Alvarez at Ajax previously and with Casemiro tipped to leave Old Trafford, it would be a like-for-like replacement.

But Lopetegui and Tim Steidten must ensure that any deal is done on favourable terms for the Hammers and nothing else, so this is one to watch in the coming weeks.

In other West Ham news, the club have made contact with Premier League billionaires to sign a new striker this summer.
