Lucy Ward reacts to Ben Johnson transfer news, tells David Moyes what West Ham United need

Lucy Ward has urged West Ham to bring in players to improve their squad in the January transfer window, as she claimed Ben Johnson would not be allowed to leave without a replacement.

The TNT Sports pundit and former Leeds United Women’s player has told David Moyes and West Ham that they need fresh faces to supplement the squad amid an ongoing injury crisis.

This has come amid interest in Johnson from Leeds United as well as Spanish clubs Real Betis and Villarreal, but after he featured in the game at Bramall Lane, any move looks a way off yet.

Speaking live on TNT Sports’ coverage of the clash v Sheffield United [21 January, 15:26], Ward shared: “I’m sure they’ll only let Johnson go if he’s got a replacement. They need players to supplement the squad as well West Ham.”

The transfer window needs to be busy

With just over a week to go until the transfer window closes, the Hammers are still yet to do any business, despite their widely recognised lack of depth up front and throughout their squad. which has been exposed by several key injuries and absences in the past month.

Lucas Paqueta, Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, Nayef Aguerd and Edson Alvarez have all been missing for the Hammers at some point in the last month for various reasons, forcing Moyes to use some of the second-string options.

Johnson has been heavily linked to a move away from the club but featured against Sheffield United in a sign that he may not be allowed to leave with the squad in the shape it is currently in.

West Ham

It will have to be a busy end to the transfer window at the London Stadium to fill the gaps in this West Ham squad, but the areas for improvement have become clear and the club must take action to improve the strength in depth at Moyes’ disposal.

In other West Ham news, the reason for Alvarez’s absence today has been explained.
