West Ham United face a battle to sign Angel Gomes before 3 February with Daniel Levy driving Tottenham's pursuit of the midfielder, according to GiveMeSport.

The online outlet reported on 28 January that although the Hammers have made enquiries of their own regarding the England international, Levy has made it a "personal mission" to take him to North London.

Gomes' Lille contract expires at the end of the season, making the final week of the winter window crucial if the Ligue 1 side are to secure a fee for him – something which Spurs are prepared to offer.

Levy and Tottenham's technical director Johan Lange see Gomes as a prime target before the 3 February deadline, and have kept in contact with the midfielder's camp as he weighs up his future.

West Ham face pressure to complete Angel Gomes transfer

Gomes making his return to the Premier League five years after departing Manchester United's academy looks to be written in the stars, but it remains to be seen at which club the 24-year-old ends up at.

An attacking midfielder or winger when he left Old Trafford for Lille in 2020, Gomes could return to his old stomping ground as the string-puller in either the Irons' or Spurs' midfield, as well as England's.

Graham Potter's first four matches in charge at the London Stadium have made clear that the Hammers are lacking pace, dynamism and control in the engine room, issues which signing Gomes would solve.

If it's game-time Gomes is after, a move to East London as opposed to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would make more sense, given Potter's current options can easily be upgraded upon.

Levy making a personal play to sign Gomes could well sway him Spurs' way, and that puts the onus on Potter and the recently-appointed Kyle Macauley to show Gomes why he should choose them instead.
