Late West Ham United twist on Deadline Day as Ismaila Sarr update emerges
West Ham made late attempts to bring Marseille winger Ismaila Sarr to the London Stadium on deadline day, but he will not be moving to England, according to Graeme Bailey.
The HITC journalist reported via his X account on 1 February that despite late efforts for Sarr, the Hammers ultimately came up short as the 11pm deadline approached.
The situation is said to be the same for Fulham, who made a late offer to sign Lyon winger Rayan Cherki after the French outfit signed Said Benrahma, but he will not be moving either.
Too little, too late
West Ham knew at the beginning of the transfer window that they would need to sign a winger. Benrahma was always expected to leave the club, and the strength in depth in that area is sorely lacking.
To leave it until the 11th hour to attempt to bring in a new option for that position in Sarr is a massive oversight from the transfer team in East London, as this deal was never going to be one they could fly through in a matter of minutes towards the end of the day.
As David Moyes’ team limped to a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth which they can be considered lucky to have won a point from, it became even more clear the level of mistake made by not bringing in a winger at the start of the window.
A loan deal for Kalvin Phillips is a good deal – despite his mistake on debut against Bournemouth – and it strengthens the team plenty, but once again the Hammers have failed to strengthen in the positions they needed most. Out wide and up front.
