Last-gasp breakdown emerges in West Ham United and Manchester City agreement over Kalvin Phillips transfer

West Ham are set to formally announce the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on Friday morning (26 January), according to Dharmesh Sheth.

The Sky Sports journalist tweeted on Friday that the deal is a straight loan to take the England international to the London Stadium, with an option to buy being discussed during the process.

He added that both clubs have decided to proceed with a straight loan for the 28-year-old midfielder as one source has revealed that the option-to-buy fee couldn’t be agreed upon.

Almost there

The deal to take Phillips to West Ham now looks to be completed barring the club making the announcement via the official channels.

But that now looks set to happen within the next few hours and that will give the midfielder plenty of time to get embedded with the rest of the squad before the game against Bournemouth on 1 February.

It’s never a straightforward process when the Hammers look to bring in players, but despite there being plenty of negotiations over the past few days, this one is just about over the line.

It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to agree on the option-to-buy clause as that takes the chance to sign him permanently out of our hands.

But that is still something we can look to discuss with Man City over the next few months if his performances are deemed good enough to make him a permanent fixture at the London Stadium.
