Kyle Macaulay makes West Ham transfer decision as Andre Silva update emerges
Andre Silva is now no longer West Ham United’s “back-up choice” for Evan Ferguson, according to Sean Whetstone.
The Hammers insider reported via his West Ham Football X account (31 January) that while the RB Leipzig striker was only an option if “all else failed” a move now seems to be off the table.
The report adds that Kyle Macauley, the man essentially taking over from Tim Steidten in leading recruitment, has had a change of heart on the striker as he’s now in control of the Hammers’ recruitment policies.
“While negotiations continue for Evan Ferguson there are no guarantees it will get over the line,” Whetstone wrote.
“Originally Andre Silva was scheduled to be a backup choice for a new face in this winter if all else failed, but this is no longer thought to be the case since Macaulay has taken over recruitment matters.”
West Ham United have made the right choice by avoiding Andre Silva
While there’s no denying that the Hammers are in dire need of a new number nine, it feels like Silva would have been a waste of time and money.
The Portugal international has a very similar play style to that of Niclas Fullkrug so when the German returns to full fitness and is available for selection again, Graham Potter would have been stuck with two of the same number nines.
Which, if that’s the way your team is built then that’s fine but as the Hammers want to be an exciting attacking side that can catch teams on the break now that Potter is in charge, it feels like the RB Leipzig man would have been a bad option.

The number nine has been out of favour for the Bundesliga side this season as he’s only made two starts out of the 15 games he’s played [Transfermarkt].
In addition to his lack of game time, he’s only managed to bag one goal this term which is far from ideal, especially with the situation West Ham are in.
