West Ham United transfer update on Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe after approach
Julen Lopetegui has not followed up on West Ham United interest in trying to sign Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe, according to Charles Watts.
Writing on Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing (25 May), the journalist reports that the Gunners playmaker will hold talks with Emirates officials about his future at the club amid a lack of regular game time this season.
But despite the Hammers having a bid rejected for him in January, the club haven’t followed up on their interest since David Moyes’ departure was confirmed.
“Talks over his long-term future will now take place, with several clubs – both in England and abroad – keeping tabs on the England international,” he wrote.
“West Ham had a loan enquiry swiftly knocked back in January, but they have yet to follow up that interest now David Moyes has been replaced by Julen Lopetegui.
“If Smith Rowe is to leave Arsenal, his preference would be to stay in the Premier League.”
West Ham United should move for Emile Smith Rowe transfer
The summer at the London Stadium is likely to be very busy, with Lopetegui wanting to put his stamp on the squad and several exits expected.
But there is the new, glaring issue that involves Lucas Paqueta at the club and his potential suspension for gambling charges and spot-fixing.
It was expected that the Brazilian would move to Manchester City this summer when his £85million release clause became active, but City have withdrawn their interest since he was charged by the FA.
But even though he is staying, he is facing a potential lifetime suspension as a result of the charges meaning West Ham must find a way to replace him.
Smith Rowe would provide fantastic depth and skill, and his qualities are very similar to Paqueta’s. If he is available then the Hammers could do worse than using him to fill a hole, whether it be on loan or permanently.
