Joe Gomez Liverpool bid update emerges as Kurt Zouma set for West Ham United transfer exit
Kurt Zouma leaving West Ham before the transfer deadline is not expected to result in a bid for Joe Gomez, Sean Whetstone reports.
According to the former Six Foot Two editor via X on 7 August the Liverpool defender is valued at £45million at Anfield.
Zouma is reportedly close to leaving the London Stadium for the UAE according to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna on 6 August with Shabab Al-Ahli looking to sign him.
But despite that Whetstone wrote that the club “will not be making a bid for Liverpool‘s Joe Gomez who is valued at £45 million if Zurt Zouma leaves, club sources have confirmed”.
West Ham interested in free agent Mats Hummels
Gomez is certainly a good player but it would be a huge surprise to see the Irons splash out that sort of money twice on a centre-back after also spending £40million to bring in Wolves captain Max Kilman [Dharmesh Sheth, 5 July].
Unless Nayef Aguerd also leaves Julen Lopetegui could feasibly get by with his former Molineux favourite, the Moroccan and Konstantinos Mavropanos.
But it would leave him very open to an injury crisis so maintaining four options in the middle would make more sense if an affordable option can be secured.
The Hammers are interested in a deal to sign former Borussia Dortmund man Mats Hummels who is available on a free transfer after leaving the Bundesliga giants following the Champions League final [Florian Plettenberg, 6 August].
Brighton appear to be further down the line in pursuit of the World Cup winner though so Tim Steidten will need to react quickly if he is to land the 35-year-old before he retires.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are now expected to pull out of a long-running pursuit of a Premier League ace.
