Jean-Clair Todibo signing isn’t what it’s been made out to be by West Ham due to PSR
West Ham United’s move for Jean-Clair Todibo is a permanent deal “in all but name” due to profit and sustainability rules, according to Sean Whetstone.
Whetstone reported on the West Ham Football X account (11 August) that Todibo’s switch to the London Stadium from OGC Nice comes with transfer budgeting, PSR rules and amortisation all in mind.
The Hammers confirmed Todibo’s arrival on a season-long loan and are set to pay a £4.2million loan fee for the defender this summer, with an appearance-based obligation to buy set to follow in 2025 [Fabrice Hawkins, 9 August].
Club sources confirmed to Whetstone that the permanent transfer of Todibo, reported to cost a total of £34.3million [Fabrizio Romano, 8 August], will be paid in instalments from next summer, making this season’s loan fee effectively the first of those.
Permanent Jean-Clair Todibo transfer is huge coup for West Ham
A matter of days ago, the Hammers looked light years away from even completing a loan deal for Todibo, with Juventus the front-runners to sign him and Manchester United another interested big-hitter.
However, due to varying circumstances, neither club was able to come to an agreement with Nice [Gazzetta dello Sport, 9 August], allowing the Irons to swoop in and sign the 24-year-old on an initial loan deal.
However, the news that Todibo’s move to the London Stadium is effectively a delayed permanent deal is a massive statement of intent from the club, showing they can beat the best to the biggest of transfers.
Given just how long Todibo has been chased by Julen Lopetegui this summer, triggering the appearance clause to make his loan permanent shouldn’t take too long, barring any lengthy injury absences.
Lopetegui has already brought in Max Kilman for £40m in this window and now has the first-choice centre-back partnership he wanted – and Todibo could prove to be a cornerstone of his new-look side for many years to come.
In other West Ham news, one journalist said he was “giddy” at the though of Julen Lopetegui’s possible starting XI at the London Stadium.
