Jan Bednarek turns down West Ham United to sign for Aston Villa on loan, Dawson could stay

Jan Bednarek has chosen to sign for Aston Villa on loan despite having been close to an agreement with West Ham, according to David Ornstein.

The Hammers had been set to seal a season-long loan deal for the Poland international as they prepare to let Craig Dawson join Wolves after receiving a £5.25m bid on 1 September.

But the Southampton ace has instead opted to move to Aston Villa after they made a late push to get a deal done, and he will now undergo a medical in the Midlands before sealing the deal.

West Ham could now make a move for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car, who flew into England earlier today to try and force through a move to the Premier League although Southampton are said to be targeting him as a replacement for Bednarek.

Now according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, that could see Dawson stay at the London Stadium now.

That’s a big blow for the Hammers, as it seemed like they had a deal all sorted and ready to go to allow Dawson his exit and bring in an experienced defender.

But ultimately the fact that he’s likely to not be first-choice at the London Stadium probably had a big say in his decision, with Steven Gerrard able to offer more regular minutes.

With so little time remaining in the transfer window a new centre back signing will now be a surprise, but the club will continue to push and try to get a deal over the line before 11pm tonight.

If nobody can be brought in, it will leave David Moyes in a position where he may pull the plug on Dawson’s exit to ensure that the club aren’t left short in a key position.

That would be heartbreaking for the defender, but the club has to come first in this instance and unless something can be sorted out then that’s the direction we’re heading in.
