‘I just had to get out’ – Wilshere discusses West Ham exit

Jack Wilshere has thanked West Ham manager David Moyes for his understanding of his situation when he left the club earlier this month.

Wilshere, 28, severed ties with the Hammers on transfer deadline day in a bid to earn a contract elsewhere and play more regularly.

In his two seasons at West Ham, Wilshere made just 19 appearances in all competitions due to serious ankle and groin injuries.

However, when the playmaker agreed to terminate his deal at the London Stadium, he revealed on Twitter that he had been fit for eight months prior to his exit.

Wilshere has now rubbished the notion that he and Moyes fell out and that he retains a good relationship with his boyhood club.

“I was probably getting to that point, if I had stayed another year, where it would have been really tough mentally to come back from,” Wilshere told Sky Sports.

When talking about Moyes, the ex-Arsenal midfielder said: “I never had a fall out with him. I was thankful to him for being honest with me.

“I’ve got a lot of friends at West Ham and it was nothing personal against them. I still speak to a lot of the players, but I just had to get out.

“I couldn’t spend another year not playing, especially at my age.”

West Ham

We were all quite excited when Wilshere joined West Ham in 2018 but we were also fully aware of the injury issues he’d had at Arsenal prior to his move to East London.

It’s always nice when a player signs for the club he supported as a child and in Wilshere, West Ham signed someone who showed a lot of promise in his early years and produced some memorable moments at Arsenal.

But injury issues, poor form and the emergence of Declan Rice really scuppered Wilshere’s chances of getting much game-time at the London Stadium so we cannot blame him for wanting to leave.

It remains to be seen where Wilshere will play next but it seems that the 34-times England international is open to just about anything.

West Ham

He added: “La Liga, Italy or Germany would be a nice change for me. Not many English players have done it.

“I always watch La Liga, it was always something I thought about. I like the league, I think it’s more technical than the English game. I think it’s somewhere I could really show what I can do.

“I don’t think I’m too young for the MLS. It’s on Sky Sports, I think there’s been a big improvement in that league. If the right opportunity came up I’d be open to it.”

Of course, Wilshere will want to find a club as soon as possible because one of the main reasons he left West Ham was to prevent his career from stagnating.

If he moves to the USA, many people will view it as a cop-out but it could also be a great chance for him to revive his career by going there for a year or two, staying fit and then, maybe, returning to England and Europe in the future.
