How 'unique' Patrick Berg could fit into West Ham's plans as transfer wanted
West Ham United are interested in the signing of Bodo/Glimt midfielder Patrick Berg.
The Hammers are yet to make a single new signing so far ahead of the upcoming Championship season.
However, they have also not lost many of their top stars either. Only Mateus Fernandes has departed London Stadium.
Nonetheless, a new midfielder will certainly be on the agenda, and Norwegian star Berg is a contender.
The 28-year-old most recently featured in the full 120 minutes against England at the World Cup.
And the Bodo/Glimt captain is said to have many qualities that could help him improve the Irons' side.
How Patrick Berg's 2025-2026 season has led to West Ham interest
Replacing Fernandes will not be an easy task but Berg has had quite the season and may be the man for the job.
The Daily Star reported in its print edition on Monday that West Ham "are tracking the holding midfielder."
The East Londoners are not the only side in the mix though, with Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Hull City and Burnley all credited as well.
Berg has had a phenomenal season on both an international and domestic level. For Bodo/Glimt, he led a Norwegian side that became "giant killers" during the most recent Champions League season.
The run saw them beat Manchester City in the league phase, while in the knock-out play-offs they eliminated 2024-2025 finalists Inter Milan.
Berg was also instrumental in the Norway side that saw them reach a historic World Cup quarter-final, only just losing to England 2-1 after extra time.
But, he had an excellent chance to help extend that run.
The Norway star was given plenty of space in the second half of extra time against the Three Lions, and unleashed a powerful strike as he looked to equalise.
But, his long-range effort would sail just over the bar.
What would Berg bring to West Ham
If the Hammers want to escape the Championship, they will need plenty of leaders in their squad.
The second division is a difficult league to gain promotion, but Berg's aura in the dressing could help Nuno's side.
Speaking via FIFA, former teammate of Berg's, Ricardo Friedrich, has given an insight into this leadership style.
He stated: "He has a conscious leadership style; he doesn't talk a lot or impose himself by raising his voice. He speaks calmly and transparently. But when he speaks, everyone stops to listen because he speaks with authority.
"Patrick is a very focused, dedicated, and very intelligent player. The way he sees football is unique; it's clear he has something extra in his understanding and vision of the game."
For West Ham supporters, it may have to be a waiting game now. Whether the interest in Berg can go beyond that with an offer remains to be seen.
But, if transfer business in E20 does not start ramping up soon, there will undoubtedly be nerves building up in East London ahead of West Ham's opening clash versus Burnley.
