Hawksbee shares what he was told about Wilson joining West Ham after Newcastle exit
West Ham have inevitably been linked with a move for Callum Wilson after it was announced he would be leaving Newcastle United this summer.
Wilson, 33, joined Newcastle for £20million from Bournemouth in 2020 but has struggled with injuries at St James’ Park in recent years.
The striker scored 49 goals in 130 games for Newcastle, with former England international Wilson having reportedly held talks with West Ham last summer.

Wilson’s ‘got West Ham written all over him’
A new striker is a necessity for Graham Potter’s side this summer after Evan Ferguson returned to Brighton.
Danny Ings has also followed Ferguson out the door, with the former Southampton striker linked with a move to Wrexham.
Meanwhile, Niclas Fullkrug has failed to meet expectations since signing from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
And amid speculation regarding where Wilson will end up, Paul Hawksbee joked what Andy Jacobs – and many others – were quick to conclude after the announcement.
Hawksbee told talkSPORT (7 July): “We heard today that Callum Wilson is leaving Newcastle. Andy’s response to that was ‘he’s got West Ham written all over him’. That may or may not be true – we’ll find out.”
West Ham will hope that Wilson – who has 88 career Premier League goals – will add some firepower up top next season, should they try to sign him, having scored just 46 league goals last campaign.
Hammers fans have been forced to rue a lack of firepower in the final third, with Potter failing to improve on Julen Lopetegui’s side, which lacked an identity.

Wilson is the answer to West Ham’s scoring woes
Wilson isn’t the answer to Potter’s side’s goalscoring problems.
Although the striker has previously shown just how good he can be when fit, none of that will matter if he is forced to watch from the sidelines.
Season | Games | Goal contributions |
2024/25 | 18 | _ |
2023/24 | 26 | 11 |
2022/23 | 36 | 23 |
Wilson could add good depth to West Ham’s squad, but Hammers fans will be disappointed should he be a nailed-on starter next season.
Instead, Potter should turn his attention to signing a young and hungry striker who has shown recently that they can perform at the top level.
