Harry Maguire may stay at Old Trafford as West Ham wait for Manchester United transfer news

West Ham United have been made to wait to sign Harry Maguire as the defender decides whether he wants to join the Irons, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported on their website on Thursday (10 August) that despite the two clubs agreeing to a deal worth £30m, the 30-year-old is yet to give the transfer his green light and agree to join the ranks at the London Stadium.

Maguire has been one of David Moyes’ top targets throughout this window and after multiple failed approaches the Irons looked set to be finally getting their man, but it is yet to be seen whether or not the English defender wants to leave Old Trafford.

Discussing the precarious position of the deal, Kieran Gill wrote: “Before personal terms can be discussed, the Hammers are awaiting confirmation that Maguire wants to make the move. Maguire could yet insist on staying at United, where he is contracted until 2025 with the option to extend for a further year.

“West Ham are hopeful that he will see the benefits of joining them. That includes being able to offer the England international guaranteed game-time ahead of Euro 2024 next summer, while Moyes would also consider naming him immediate captain after the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal.”

No-brainer

The way this transfer window has gone so far at the London Stadium, you honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see this deal fall at the final hurdle, but there is absolutely no logical reason for this deal to not be completed now.

Maguire should still have aspirations of playing consistent football and that is never going to happen while Erik ten Hag is in charge and Old Trafford, therefore a move to Premier League regulars and Europa League side West Ham should be the perfect next step.

The centre-back has been very open in his desire to prove his critics wrong both in England and the United shirt and the only way he can continue to do that is by playing matches, therefore he needs to end his tenure in Manchester.

If he does decide to remain on the United bench, it may well be a blessing in disguise for Moyes as he needs defenders who still show ambition as the Irons embark on what is almost a new era this summer, having lost Rice and potentially Lucas Paqueta.

Hopefully, Maguire makes the right choice and makes the move to the capital.
