Graham Potter to thank as sources speak out on Promise David to West Ham transfer

West Ham United have been dealt a major blow in their hopes of signing Union Saint-Gilloise striker Promise David.

David was identified as an ideal West Ham replacement for Niclas Fullkrug ahead of the January transfer window.

West Ham are set to sanction Fullkrug’s exit early in the New Year, but only if a replacement can be brought in.

Talk of a possible move for David got supporters excited, but an update provided by Alex Crook on Wednesday suggests that deal has little chance of going through.

Promise David doesn’t want to join relegation-threatened club

Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett recently reported that David is one of a number of striker targets on West Ham’s radar.

It looks as though the Hammers will have to find the next name on that list, as Crook reported via talkSPORT‘s website that West Ham‘s hopes of signing David are dwindling.

That is because sources have indicated the 24-year-old, described as a “goal machine”, does not want to swap Champions League football for a Premier League relegation battle.

It is reported that West Ham chiefs are now back to the drawing board, with the January transfer window opening in a few weeks’ time.

Why Graham Potter is to ‘thank’ for David transfer being off

Tellingly, the report does not mention David is holding out to join one of the Premier League’s established elite.

Had West Ham been in mid-table, that may have made all the difference to a deal going through in the New Year.

As it is, though, the Irons are 18th and are two points adrift of safety with 15 matches played.

West Ham’s top scorers this season

Nuno Espirito Santo has done a good job since arriving at the London Stadium, with West Ham losing just one of their past six matches.

West Ham’s 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday was another example of this improved version of the Hammers, who now look like a team.

That was not the case under Potter, who departed with West Ham second bottom of the division.

While it is true United have only technically climbed one place, they would be far higher in the table had the season started when Nuno was appointed.

Potter’s now in a new job as Sweden’s national team manager, but the ramifications of his disastrous spell in East London are still being felt.
