Graham Potter can't accept 'insulting' Edson Alvarez offer as West Ham exit news emerges

Edson Alvarez is now expected to depart West Ham just two years after signing for the London club. 

The Mexican international has struggled in Graham Potter’s system and has now gone all of pre-season without making an appearance.

Now, reports suggest that Alvarez is set to depart West Ham, with the midfielder falling down the pecking order.

However, Potter cannot just accept any offer for the Alvarez.

Ajax eye loan bid for Alvarez

Earlier this summer, it was reported that West Ham had offered Alvarez to potential suitors in hopes of finding him a new club.

Yet, on the eve of the new Premier League season, the Mexican is still on the books at the London Stadium.

Now, according to Vi.nl on 15 August, Ajax are considering a loan move for Alvarez, just two years after he left the Dutch giants. 

  • Alvarez has made 73 appearances for West Ham since signing from Ajax
  • The midfielder has slowly fallen out of favour under Potter
  • West Ham are now looking to sell Alvarez this summer

If this offer is made, it would be an insult to West Ham. The Hammers only signed the midfielder from Ajax for £35million two years ago, and he still holds value. 

Alvarez is clearly still a good player, with the midfielder only captaining Mexico to the Gold Cup last month.

His departure is rather due to Potter’s preference, with the manager unable to fit the 27-year-old into his system. 

Realistically, West Ham need to seek a permanent sale rather than a loan so that the funds can be allocated to bring in a player that suits Potter’s system.

West Ham need to fix their transfer policy 

In recent years, West Ham have struggled to make signings who have gone on to be a success.

Only a handful of players have been sold on for a profit, with Mohammed Kudus’ move to Tottenham being one.

However, many others have gone on to be flops, and if Alvarez is sold, it is unlikely that the London club will make money on his departure.

Therefore, the Hammers have to fix their transfer policy to help make money of their signings.

If not, PSR could become a real issue for the London club in the future.
