Gianluca Scamacca could join Roma ‘shortly’ after West Ham United open up to loan-to-buy deal

West Ham could allow Gianluca Scamacca to join Roma “shortly” after opening up to the idea of a loan-to-buy deal, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Writing in their print newspaper (19 July, pg 14) the Hammers are said to be more open to a loan deal now that they have sold Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m, with the Italy international open to a move to his boyhood club.

Roma are willing to pay £3.4m as a loan fee to get Scamacca now, with an obligation to buy for a set fee depending on Champions League qualification and the number of appearances he makes in the 2023/24 season.

Madness

Scamacca is quite clearly an incredibly talented footballer and with Lucas Paqueta now fully settled in and Jarrod Bowen still flying, he is obviously our best option to play as the number nine.

Michail Antonio’s future is up in the air with some talk of a move to Saudi Arabia, while Danny Ings has struggled to catch fire since his transfer back in January.

Scamacca has scored three goals in two pre-season friendlies and looks to be firmly over his injury issues that hampered him last year, and he would be a fine addition to the starting lineup on a regular basis.

But if Scamacca wants to leave the club then it’s probably best to ensure that he moves on, but a loan deal where we only recoup a fraction of the fee we spent last year doesn’t sound like it is in our best interests at all.

We should be looking to get our money back at the very least, not helping Roma get a bargain. Hopefully he stays, but if he has to go then the deal surely has to be better for us than Roma.

In other West Ham news, another player could be set to move to a Premier League club with talks on over a £5m deal.
