Flynn Downes add-ons update emerges as West Ham United exit confirmed

Southampton have paid West Ham United an initial £15million for Flynn Downes, with a further £3million to come in add-ons, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster reported on Tuesday (16 July) that the newly promoted side has not paid the entire £18million fee upfront as originally expected [Dharmesh Sheth, 15 July], but will pay the difference when add-ons are activated.

Russell Martin’s side announced the return of the 25-year-old after Downes was given permission to exit the Hammers’ pre-season training camp early to complete a medical with the south coast club.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Vai Bhardwaj said: “Southampton have signed West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes in a £15million deal.

“The fee also includes £3million in add-ons. Downes spent last season on loan at St Mary’s and made 37 appearances in all competitions as Southampton were promoted back to the Premier League.”

How much did West Ham United get for Flynn Downes after Southampton transfer?

West Ham would have likely preferred to receive the entire £18million transfer fee upfront for Downes this summer, but they will be happy to have the bulk of the cash through the London Stadium door immediately.

They have still managed to turn a profit on a player who didn’t ever really manage to hold down a regular starting spot under David Moyes and although they could have maybe bargained for more, this feels like a sensible deal.

Hopefully, Julen Lopetegui will be given this money to add to his squad ahead of the new season. Downes may not need to be directly replaced, but the Hammers are still in the market for a couple of new additions.

A new striker remains high on the agenda and they don’t tend to come cheap. While £15million may not stretch very far in the modern footballing world, it could help Tim Steidten get a deal over the line for one of his potential targets.
