Flamengo open talks to sign Lucas Paqueta from West Ham United, want immediate agreement
Flamengo have opened talks with West Ham United about signing Lucas Paqueta this summer, according to GE Globo.
Writing on their website (3 July), the Brazilian news outlet report that the South American giants “want to take advantage” of the betting scandal surrounding the playmaker to sign him either on loan or permanently.
Talks are ongoing with the Hammers about a potential deal and while they want an “immediate agreement”, long negotiations are expected as West Ham will need convincing to sanction the deal.
West Ham United have a Lucas Paqueta decision to make
In a normal world, the Hammers wouldn’t even entertain a conversation about the Brazil star leaving the club this summer.
However, it’s not a normal situation right now because of Paqueta’s betting charges that could see him banned for a long time [The Sun, 4 June] and so there’s definitely a decision to be made.
As it stands West Ham have no plans not to use him until a punishment is actually handed down to him, and a hearing isn’t expected for several months [The Sun, 4 June], but there is a temptation for the club to potentially make some of their money back before they’re unable to use him.
In addition, the player’s wishes may come into play. Flamengo is a club close to his heart and the adoration of the fans may be something he really needs in these tough times.
It’s an odd rumour but there’s plenty to it that makes sense and it’s one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks and months. Flamengo aren’t quite Manchester City, but they could be the next best thing for Paqueta this summer.
In other West Ham news, the club have made a decision on the chase for Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo.
