Fabrizio Romano: West Ham United transfer for Carlos Borges hijacked by Ajax

West Ham look set to miss out on a deal to sign Manchester City forward Carlos Borges as he is close to joining Ajax, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Sky Sports Italy journalist tweeted on 1 August that the Hammers had been close to landing the Portuguese winger, but the Dutch club now have a verbal agreement in place to sign him.

He said the 19-year-old is now due to undergo medical tests in Amsterdam as Ajax look to finalise the deal and hand out a significant blow to the Irons’ transfer plans.

Disaster

This latest development is nothing short of a disaster for the West Ham hierarchy as it looks as though a deal to sign Borges was all but done towards the back end of last week.

The Hammers are desperately trying to bring in new players to strengthen their squad after seeing a number of bids rejected for several players in a number of positions so far this summer.

David Moyes is keen to strengthen his attacking options after struggling to find the back of the net in the Premier League last season – scoring just 42 goals – and the signing of the Portuguese would have also lined up with Tim Steidten’s plans to bring in more youthful players.

West Ham

West Ham insider ExWHUemployee reported on 28 July that the proposed signing of Borges would be for about £14million, with Man City having a £40million buyback clause included in the deal.

But that plan now looks to have gone out of the window and it’s yet another shocking development in the Hammers’ pursuit of new signings.

In other West Ham news, one Hammers star is expected to join a CL club in the next few days.
