Fabrizio Romano shares Trevoh Chalobah update amid West Ham United interest
Trevoh Chalobah is set to fight for his place at Chelsea despite interest from West Ham United during the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist reported in his Daily Briefing column on Saturday (3 February) that the versatile defender had a number of chances to leave Stamford Bridge last month, including a move to David Moyes’ side, but nothing was ever close.
Chalobah’s high wages were considered too high for any side to complete a six-month loan deal, so the 24-year-old will instead continue his recovery from injury and attempt to force his way back into Mauricio Pochettino’s thinking this season.
West Ham could complete Trevor Chalobah transfer in the summer
West Ham are already known to have spent a big loan fee to bring Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium this summer and the England international earns reasonably high wages, so it is understandable that the Hammers weren’t keen to do the same again with Chalobah.
The defender has impressed when fit in a Chelsea shirt, but his fitness this season would have meant that it would have been an incredible risk to pay such a high wage for a player who could break down with injury at any point of the campaign.
However, that doesn’t mean that the Hammers couldn’t revisit this deal in the summer, especially if Chalobah doesn’t manage to force his way into Pochettino’s starting XI on a regular basis week in and week out.

In the summer, Chelsea may well be more open to a permanent exit, or even a cheaper loan deal and the defender may be more eager to depart in search of regular first-team football.
With plenty of uncertainty surrounding a number of players in the Hammers’ backline, a summer move for Chalobah may be the ideal solution, especially if he wants out of Stamford Bridge again.
