Fabrizio Romano shares Romelu Lukaku update as West Ham United transfer news emerges

Inter Milan are not in talks to sign Gianluca Scamacca from West Ham United this month despite speculation linking the striker with a return to Italy, according to Fabrizio Romano.

CalcioMercato reported on 9 January that Inter have lost patience with Romelu Lukaku and have identified Scamacca, 24, as a replacement while the January transfer window is open.

However, writing via his CaughtOffside Substack on 10 January, Guardian journalist Romano reported that Inter aren’t giving up on former Chelsea and Manchester United striker Lukaku and are instead waiting for him “to reach full fitness and form”.

Romano does add that a decision will be made on Lukaku’s long-term future at the San Siro in the summer.

No chance

Scamacca’s not had the best of starts at the London Stadium, we admit.

Since joining in a £35.5million deal from Sassuolo in the summer, the Italy international has managed seven goals in 23 appearances across all competitions.

However, only three of those goals have been in the Premier League and the other four have come against teams in the Europa Conference League against the likes of Viborg, Silkeborg and Anderlecht.

In the Premier League, Scamacca’s only goals have been against Wolves, Fulham and Leeds – three teams who you’d expect us to be beating after the seasons we’ve enjoyed lately.

While it’s great that the Italian is scoring against teams who could be in a relegation battle with us this season, we need to see him scoring more regularly.

Admittedly, players can take their time to settle in the English top-flight and Scamacca looks as though he may take over a year to fully get up to speed.

But we haven’t given up on him yet and we shouldn’t be looking to cash in on what was such a big-money signing.

Unless a huge bid is made, Scamacca’s going nowhere.
