Fabrizio Romano shares ‘important’ FFP update at West Ham United in January transfer verdict

Fabrizio Romano has claimed West Ham will have to sell players to find a balance under the threat of Financial Fair Play in the January transfer window.

The transfer expert claimed that the likes of Said Benrahma will have to depart for West Ham to get serious business done, with the outgoings the focus of this transfer window.

After Everton were docked ten points earlier in the season after Profit and Sustainability breaches, an increased focus has emerged throughout the Premier League to avoid falling into the same position.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT [18 January], Romano shared: “I think West Ham’s business will depend on the outgoings.

“It will be important to see what happens with the players leaving the club because, as always, there’s Financial Fair Play, and it’s important for West Ham to find the right balance.

“So, for example, for a player like Benrahma, we have to see what happens with Lyon. Lyon are interested in him, so this could still be a possibility.”

Conflicting reports

Romano probably has a point. Before the financial documents were submitted by the club on 31 December, there were concerns that they had come dangerously close to breaching FFP rules, so it makes sense that those concerns are still lingering at the London Stadium.

However, many reports have suggested the likes of Benrahma and Danny Ings wouldn’t be allowed to leave West Ham unless replacements could be brought in first.

This contradicts what Romano was saying, so which one is it? Sell to buy, or buy to sell? With interest ramping up in Benrahma in particular, with Romano also claiming Lyon remain interested and his exit could still be a possibility, something has got to give soon.

With just under two weeks left of the transfer window, any business in East London will have to pick up pace, and if the Hammers are looking to strengthen in this window, perhaps they’ll need to ship players out first.

In other West Ham news, the club are best placed to secure a deal for Kalvin Phillips.
