ExWHUemployee: West Ham United have clear run to sign Edson Alvarez as £35m formal bid ready

West Ham now have a clear run to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez with Borussia Dortmund unable to strike a deal, according to ExWHUemployee.

Writing on Patreon on Friday (14 July), the reliable Hammers insider reported that the Irons have already made enquiries about signing the 25-year-old Mexico international.

It is understood that those opening approaches are now expected to be turned into a formal offer of around £35million.

West Ham

Get it done

With Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal now a done deal, West Ham should have the funds available to go out and buy Alvarez and a few other players to bolster David Moyes’ squad.

Alvarez is an experienced defensive midfielder at the peak of his career with experience playing for a massive club in Ajax in the Champions League and internationally with Mexico.

Last season, he played 44 times for Ajax and scored four goals and supplied three assists.

The former Club America midfielder is a great ball-winning midfielder, who can also play in the heart of the defence.

The Analyst reports that last season, Alvarez made the most successful tackles in the Ajax squad with 40, which ranked him 15th in the Eredivisie. An impressive feat for a player at a top club who averaged 67 per cent possession.

Alvarez’s aggression does lead to him being booked a lot so West Ham will need to have a back-up option for the Mexican in that role because there could be one or two suspensions going his way.

But overall, we’d be happy with this use of some of the money from selling Rice.
