ExWHUemployee responds to Conor Coventry West Ham United exit news, contract option appears

ExWHUEmployee believes that reports stating Conor Coventry has been told he can leave West Ham are false and the player doesn’t know his future yet.

Reports on Tuesday (29 November) stated that Coventry had been told to find a new club, with first-team minutes hard to come by so far this season for the 22-year-old midfielder.

But writing in an update on his official Patreon page (29 November), Ex has been told this isn’t true and that there is an option to extend the player’s contract until 2024 which could be triggered.

“Despite breaking news that Conor Coventry has been told he can leave the club in reports today we can state that this isn’t true,” he said.

“The player has been given no indication on where his future lies and is still hoping to get more first team games at West Ham.

“The report is also floored because it says the club want to cash in on the player before his contract expires where as we can confirm the club have another one year option on Coventry, so could renew it if they wished and this would stop the need to cash in now.

“Whilst Coventry is obviously playing for his future and could still keave, it hasn’t been decided at this point. He is expected to feature in West Ham’s friendly match (testimonial game)next Tuesday against Cambridge United.”

Great news

Midfield is an area of the pitch where West Ham have really struggled this season with only Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Flynn Downes as the only real options for the position.

Coventry has received opportunities mainly in the Europa Conference League and impressed, but the standard of opposition is obviously low and a huge difference to the Premier League.

Manuel Lanzini has also had a few minutes here and there in midfield but Coventry deserves a real chance to show if he’s capable of performing at this level and he won’t be able to do that with limited chances on the pitch.

Any decision to let him leave in January would have been premature, so keeping him until the summer at least makes far more sense for all parties involved.

If he’s not going to get chances then we can move him on in the summer for a small fee, and if we are going to give him those chance then the second half of this season would be the perfect time to do it.
