Edson Alvarez exit: Monaco make approach for West Ham midfielder
Edson Alvarez could be on his way out of West Ham United during the January window as Monaco make an approach, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer specialist reporter shared on X (8 January) that the Ligue 1 outfit are interested in bringing the Mexican international to the club on loan from the London Stadium, in what is “not an easy deal” to complete.
Alvarez has made 18 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers during this campaign, but has so far failed to score, has been sent off twice, and has attracted criticism for his performances.
Romano posted: “AS Monaco approached West Ham to discuss conditions to bring Edson Alvarez to the club on loan.
“It’d be an opportunity for the player to return in Champions League and to be key player of Monaco project.
“Not an easy deal with West Ham, but contacts started.”
Edson Alvarez to leave West Ham on loan?
Alvarez has enjoyed a solid career to date, and is now at the prime age of 27 where he will have to make key decisions about his future.
A loan to Monaco could be a clean slate for the midfield man, who has been sluggish at the best of times for the Irons this campaign and has let down now-departed head coach Julen Lopetegui with his inconsistency and lack of discipline.
The talent is clearly there, but has not been channelled enough for a player with 83 senior international caps to his name.
Monaco represent a chance for him to play in the Champions League, in which he has already featured during his time at Ajax before moving to England in 2023.
West Ham are expected to shuffle their pack in the transfer market this month but are wary of PSR due to the amount spent in the summer, comfortably into nine figures and so far proving little positive effect.
This has wound up in the sacking of Lopetegui and his staff after just 22 games, with transfer dealings currently taking a backseat.
In other West Ham news, the Irons board have shown disrespect to Lopetegui after what they did on Wednesday morning.
