David Moyes told to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire at West Ham United

West Ham have been urged to sign Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire by former first-team coach Stuart Pearce.

With defender Craig Dawson reportedly seeking a move away from the club to be closer to his family [Evening Standard], and his contract up at the end of the campaign, the Hammers will be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements this summer.

Furthermore, Kurt Zouma has been battling constant injury niggles and Nayef Aguerd has also missed much of the campaign so far, manager David Moyes will be desperate for a reliable centre-back, and his former coach believes the Old Trafford outcast would be a great addition to his team.

West Ham

The 60-year-old who left his role within Moyes’ staff at the end of a successful campaign last season urged his former colleague and other Premier League clubs to make a move for the England international.

Speaking to talkSPORT Breakfast, Pearce said: “If I was West Ham, if I was Newcastle, if I was Aston Villa, I’d be all over trying to get Harry Maguire out of there. I’d be asking the question whether he’s available. He’d be a brilliant addition to a football club. He’s the right age, the right stature, right experience. He might just need another challenge now as he’s not getting regular football.”

Reliable defender needed

No doubt, Moyes has endured his fair share of injury trouble at the back throughout the campaign already.

Kurt Angelo Ogbonna, Zouma, Aguerd, and Dawson have all suffered injury setbacks this season, which has meant the former Everton boss struggling to find and rely on a settled centre-back pairing this season, despite signing Thilo Kehrer during the summer. Such inconsistencies at the back has probably led to their poor form domestically this campaign.

The Hammers need reliable and durable options at the back, and Maguire, despite the constant criticism towards him since his move to Old Trafford in 2019, has showcased on numerous occasions throughout his career that he can be relied upon to lead from the back, especially at international level.

It’s clear, the 29-year-old needs a new lease of life after failing to impress new boss Erik Ten Hag and he may find a settled and ideal environment to kickstart his club career in East London.
