David Gold welcomes Craig Dawson to West Ham in Twitter post
West Ham co-owner David Gold has taken to Twitter to welcome defender Craig Dawson to the London Stadium after he completed a season-long loan move from Watford on Monday.
According to Sky Sports, the 30-year-old defender could make his Hammers debut when David Moyes’ side takes on Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.
West Ham have been in the hunt for defensive reinforcements since the end of last season and have reportedly come up short in pursuits of Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori [BBC Sport].
Dawson can play as a centre-back and a right-back but based on the players who the Irons have pursed before signing him, it’s likely that Moyes will view the former West Brom man as a central option for his defence.
On Tuesday, Gold took to his personal Twitter account to say that West Ham could add Dawson permanently from Watford at the end of the current season while also speaking about what the ex-England Under-21 international can add to Moyes’ side.
Gold said: “I’m pleased to confirm the signing of versatile defender Craig Dawson on a season-long loan from Watford.
“The 30-year-old, who could make his transfer to WHU permanent at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, adds PL experience and quality to the Hammers’ squad.
“Good luck, Craig.”
After two clean sheets in their last two Premier League matches, it’s unlikely that Dawson will be thrown straight into Moyes’ starting line-up for the trip to Tottenham.
Fabian Balbuena, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell have made up West Ham’s back-three in wins over Wolves and Leicester. We really cannot see how Moyes can justify deviating away from that unless he feels that Dawson’s is somehow better at combatting the threat of someone like Harry Kane or Heung-min Son.
Dawson’s also made just one appearance this season and that came in Watford’s 3-1 defeat to Newport County in the Carabao Cup on September 22.
The new Hammers man is unlikely to be ready in time to play against Spurs and we see him possibly as someone just to add an extra layer of depth to Moyes’ options in case there are any injury, suspension or form issues.
In other West Ham news, Issa Diop could be back in the squad to face Spurs on Sunday.
