Danny Ings now set for West Ham United exit as David Moyes sack decision made

Danny Ings could well be heading for the West Ham United exit door after a decision was made on David Moyes’ future at the London Stadium.

The Scot will now stay as the Hammers’ boss for the 2023/24 season after previously feeling the pressure in East London (BBC Sport, 12 June).

There were plenty of times during the campaign when Moyes was on the brink of being sacked by the board. The Newcastle home defeat springs to mind.

However, an excellent end to the season and a brilliant Conference League final win over Fiorentina have prolonged his time in East London.

One player who didn’t play too much of a part was Ings. The 30-year-old featured 22 times for the Hammers, scoring three goals and registering two assists. The majority of his minutes came from the bench.

It was a surprise to see Moyes refrain from using the former Liverpool man. During his time at Aston Villa, the “brilliant” forward was lauded for some of the goals he scored (The Independent, 21 August 2021).

One man who believes Ings wasn’t a Moyes signing is Frank McAvennie.

“Someone told me it wasn’t David Moyes who brought him in,” he told West Ham Zone.

“It’s starting to look as if it might be right.”

West Ham’s former striker might have a point. With Gianluca Scamacca struggling, Ings could well have been brought in as a panic signing.

With another big summer of recruitment and Moyes still in charge, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the former Southampton man move on.
