Chelsea weigh up Wesley Gassova transfer offer as West Ham United eye summer switch

Chelsea are weighing up an opening transfer offer for West Ham United transfer target Wesley Gassova, according to Mark Brus.

The CaughtOffside editor reported via his Daily Briefing column (4 July) that the Blues are considering a package that may reach £16.9million [€20million] but the Hammers are also expected to make a move for his signature.

Gassova has several suitors throughout Europe including Fulham, Napoli, Roma and Nice and Corinthians are understood to be willing to listen to offers in the region of around £25.4million [€30million].

Previous reports have suggested the Irons have already submitted an opening bid of £15.2million [€18million] for the Brazilian winger but that was not accepted by Corinthians [ESPN, 18 April].

Will West Ham United win the summer transfer race for Chelsea target Wesley Gassova?

This transfer race feels like it has been going on for ages already but at this moment in time, it doesn’t show any sign of stopping in the coming days as more and more clubs enter the race for Gassova’s signature.

The Hammers are clearly keen to bring the Brazilian to the London Stadium this summer, but whether or not they or any other team interested in his services willing to match Corinthians’ asking price remains to be seen.

£25million does feel like a lot of money for a player who is yet to prove himself in the Premier League, but Gassova is a very talented gem if so many of Europe’s biggest clubs are trying to bring him over from South America.

With Luis Guilherme already through the door this summer, the Irons may well decide to look elsewhere as they continue their recruitment between now and the start of the season as Julen Lopetegui looks to put his stamp on the playing squad.

For now, new defensive additions appear to be the number one priority. Once they are sorted, then attention can turn back to the frontline instead.
