Celtic signing verdict issued amid amazement at ‘ridiculous’ West Ham United transfer news

Max Kilman’s “ridiculous” impending move from Wolves to West Ham proves Celtic have no chance of competing with Premier League clubs for Che Adams, according to Simon Donnelly.

The ex-Hoops player told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard via X (5 July) that the money on offer in the English top flight is so huge that with the Molineux side said to be interested in the former Southampton forward he will likely stay south of the border.

West Ham are set to announce a £40million deal for Wolves captain Kilman after he completed his medical on Friday [Sky Sports News, 5 July].

Donnelly said: “[With] the English Premier [League] it’s the salaries. I know Celtic [have] Champions League and everything that comes with it but you just have to look at that transfer from Wolves to West Ham, £40million, it’s ridiculous.

“If there’s interest down there, with the salaries they can pay, I’d be surprised if somebody like Che Adams came to Scotland.”

West Ham to sign Wolves captain for Julen Lopetegui

The Hammers have committed big money to the Kilman deal, although less than the £45m it had been quoted to take to prize him away from Molineux [BBC Sport, 18 June].

For a Premier League captain and regular starter at centre-back with years left on his contract it was always going to cost.

But West Ham were already interested in the 27-year-old and Julen Lopetegui’s time managing him at the Midlands club appears to have old increased the desire to bring him in.

According to talkSPORT on 2 July Wolves’ interest in Adams has cooled, but if he has other offers in the English top flight it might push him out of reach of the Scottish Premiership champions.

That could change however if they do a big-money deal to sell star midfielder Matt O’Riley, with the Irons having held talks over a deal for the £30m-rated Danish international [HITC, 2 July], having previously been linked to their own centre-back skipper Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The Irons need to get to work on signing some new strikers themselves having seen bids for the likes of Samu Omorodion rejected so far this summer.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are in the hunt to bring in multiple players from a Premier League giant.
