Carlos Soler transfer twist emerges at West Ham United after late PSG exit

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler has joined West Ham United on a straight loan deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist reported via X on Saturday (31 August) that the Spanish midfielder’s deadline-day move to the London Stadium is just a basic temporary switch for the remainder of the Premier League season.

Reports had suggested that the 27-year-old’s move to East London would have included an option to make it permanent next summer for a fee understood to be in the region of £16.8million [Fabrizio Romano, 30 August].

Will West Ham sign Carlos Soler from PSG permanently next summer

It is a bit of a surprise to see that no permanent option has been included in Soler’s move this summer given the sheer amount of speculation there had been over a £16.8million clause in the last couple of days.

However, this straight loan agreement could well prove to be a better deal for the Hammers in the long run. If Soler is a success, PSG will likely be willing to negotiate next season because he doesn’t appear to be a part of their long-term plans.

If he isn’t, the Irons aren’t tied to a contract where they will have to make his stay in the Premier League permanent. This is a proper old-fashioned try-before-you-buy deal that doesn’t happen too often in modern football.

Hopefully, the former is true and the Spanish international will take to English football like a duck to water.

Julen Lopetegui has been desperate to add some more creativity to his ranks and on the face of it Soler does exactly that.

Supporters will have to wait a while to see him in action in claret and blue with the international break around the corner, but he could well make his debut against Fulham later on in September.
