Ben Johnson contract update at West Ham United shared amid Rangers transfer interest
Ben Johnson could still pen a new contract at West Ham United, according to BBC Sport.
The report on 4 June suggests that talks are continuing over extending the full-back’s stay at London Stadium, with his present terms set to expire at the end of the month.
The 24-year-old had been widely expected to move on this summer, with Rangers and Leeds United among the clubs linked with his signature.
However, it is thought that the Scottish side may “struggle to meet Johnson’s personal terms” – an issue that may be replicated at Leeds following their failure to secure promotion from the Championship.
Should West Ham United try to keep Ben Johnson?
Head coach Julen Lopetegui has a sizeable squad overhaul project on his hands at West Ham this summer.
The team the Spaniard has inherited from David Moyes is set to undergo dramatic changes, with a number of players out of contract and several likely to be deemed unsuitable for the high-possession style employed by Lopetegui – a stark contrast from the tactics utilised by his Scottish counterpart.
Johnson only recorded 854 minutes of action across all competitions for the Hammers last season, with first-choice right-back Vladimir Coufal the club’s most-used player, featuring for 4,063 minutes.

However, Johnson is versatile and, at 24, could still be sold at a later date if he fails to force his way into Lopetegui’s plans.
With so much work to do on the squad, retaining the Hammers academy graduate could prove a sensible piece of business.
