Ben Johnson completes medical as West Ham United transfer update emerges

Ben Johnson has completed a medical with Ipswich Town as he nears a move away from West Ham, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reported via its website [25 June] that the 24-year-old is set to sign a four-year deal at Portman Road with his contract set to expire at the London Stadium later this week.

It is understood, as per The Athletic, that Johnson was offered a last-ditch five-year contract to stay with the Hammers, but took the time to assess his options and now looks set to join the newly promoted side.

While Julen Lopetegui made his feelings on the topic clear, promising the player more minutes on the pitch, as per HITC, Ipswich look set to add a talented full-back to their ranks this summer.

The academy graduate only made four Premier League starts under David Moyes last season, clearly growing impatient at his lack of opportunities at the London Stadium.

Despite his lack of game time, Johnson is an extremely versatile player, capable of playing anywhere across the back line and further up the pitch if needed, including each flank.

Ipswich will want to remain in the top tier of English football after securing promotion over Leeds United last term, and adding the West Ham full-back for free is certainly not a bad start.

Ben Johnson West Ham
Ben Johnson had looked certain to leave West Ham United this summer.

He has over a century of appearances for the Hammers, leaving some fans very disappointed not to see him put pen to paper on a brand-new deal at the London Stadium, instead searching for a different club.

At 24 years of age, Johnson still has plenty to give in the Premier League, and the player seems to believe that his development is stalling the longer he stays with the Irons.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have made an approach to sign Samu Omorodion, with an update emerging on his price tag.
