Andy Irving exit on cards at West Ham in January as Celtic transfer news emerges

Andy Irving could leave West Ham United in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The outlet reported via their website on 26 December that the midfielder is the subject of interest from Celtic ahead of the one-month window.

He has struggled for playing time at the London Stadium, racking up just 60 minutes of playing time across all competitions so far this season.

West Ham to sell Andy Irving to help Julen Lopetegui sign players

The Irons are already up to their FFP maximum, meaning they are not in a favourable position to make new signings in January [Hammers.News].

West Ham, therefore, have to sell players before bringing in new ones through the doors at the London Stadium next month.

It would thus make sense to sell Irving, although he is unlikely to command a significant transfer fee.

The East London outfit shelled out £1.6million to acquire his services from Austria Klagenfurt last year and allowed him to stay there on loan for the 2023-24 season [The Athletic].

Irving was linked with a move away in the summer, but Julen Lopetegui reportedly convinced him to stay put.

The 24-year-old could now be regretting that decision, having been left on the fringes of the Hammers squad.

He would not be keen on the idea of sitting on the sidelines and waiting for a rate opportunity to impress, and could, therefore, push for an exit when the window opens next week.

It remains to be seen how much money Celtic are willing to fork out to sign the Scot.
