Mateus Fernandes is nearing the exit door at West Ham United.

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed an £85million deal to take the Portugal midfielder to north London.

Manchester United were also thought to be in the running, but were said to be unwilling to reach the Hammers' asking price.

Fernandes only made the move to London Stadium a year ago for a fee in the region of £40m from Southampton.

However, West Ham's relegation from the Premier League meant it was always likely that Fernandes could be sacrificed.

But the news of Fernandes' sale has sparked some debate, not least about the fee it has taken to secure his signature.

Mateus Fernandes' West Ham fee sparks talkSPORT debate

The topic of Tottenham's agreed deal with West Ham for Fernandes was a topic on talkSPORT's breakfast show on Wednesday.

Spurs are reported to have agreed a straight £85m fee without add-ons to secure Fernandes' signature from their rivals.

Gabby Agbonlahor, a former Aston Villa player and noted supporter, claimed that the fee means Morgan Rogers has to be worth £150m.

It sparked a debate with co-host Andy Goldstein, and fellow presented Laura Kirk-Francis, who labelled the Fernandes fee "absolutely insane".

Agbonlahor said: "If Mateus Fernandes is worth £85million, Morgan Rogers is worth more than £130million."

That prompted Goldstein to congratulate Man United for pulling out of the deal, to which Agbonlahor retorted: "That's the market. If he's worth £85million, Rogers is worth £150million."

An exasperated Goldstein said: "But he's not worth that! He's not, he's not worth £150million. That's not the yardstick."

Kirk-Francis was then asked what she thought about the Fernandes fee, to which she replied: "I think £85million is insane. Absolutely insane.

"But it is where we are in the market at the moment. But £150million for Morgan Rogers? That's ridiculous. £130million is already too much."

Who else could leave West Ham United?

The sale of Fernandes will go a long way to balancing the books at London Stadium.

Relegation from the Premier League hit the Hammers in the pocket, but raking in such a huge fee for the 21-year-old will certainly help in that regard.

He is not the only Irons player linked with the exit door this summer, though, and there could be more players sold in the coming weeks.

Crysencio Summerville, whose World Cup dream with Netherlands is over following a shoot-out defeat to Morocco, is attracting interest.

Manchester United were the most heavily linked with a £50m move, while Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa have also been mooted with an interest.

Captain Jarrod Bowen is also said to be interesting Everton and Villa, though there is hope the skipper may stay and lead the battle for promotion next term.
