West Ham United broke new ground in the EFL to sign Arne Engels during the transfer window.

The Hammers forked out a reported £22million to bring in the Belgium midfielder from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

That represented a new record for a fee paid out by a club in the EFL, with West Ham showing big faith in the 22-year-old.

The 22-year-old has made four appearances in a Hammers shirt so far, and was a starter as West Ham beat Wolves 4-2 for their first Championship win of the campaign on Tuesday.

However, talkSPORT hosts Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist were at odds over the deal when discussing it live on air.

What did Brazil and McCoist say about West Ham ace Arne Engels?

West Ham spent big on Engels as part of their rebuild following relegation from the Premier League.

It was a slow start to the season, but the victory over Wolves is sure to build some confidence.

Brazil is a noted Celtic supporter, while McCoist played for their Old Firm rivals Rangers.

But surprisingly, it was Brazil who was more sceptical about the move than McCoist was.

Brazil live on talkSPORT: "The Hammers smashed the EFL transfer record for one player, Engels arriving from Celtic for £22million.

"Ally, just on Engels, I'm not sure on him, I don't know if that's a great signing or not."

McCoist replied: "I quite like him, I know you've had your doubts and a lot of the Celtic boys have had their doubts but I must admit I quite like him. I think he'll do well."

Proof will be in the pudding for Engels and West Ham

There is no denying that it was a big fee to fork out for a club in the second tier.

But the whole market was pretty wild this summer in truth, so if West Ham wanted Engels they had to fork out the money.

Essentially, only time will tell whether Engels was worth the outlay, and the proof of that pudding will be whether West Ham earn promotion or not.

It might have been a slow start, but you just sense once the new guys start to gel a little that West Ham can be a real force in this league.
