Tim Steidten may have West Ham United transfer regret after what Nayef Aguerd did

Tim Steidten may regret allowing Nayef Aguerd to leave West Ham United after his performance helped Morocco earn a 5-1 win over Gabon on Friday.

The defender has been in stellar form since leaving the London Stadium for a loan stint at Real Sociedad and has even been linked with a move to Real Madrid as they’ve lost both Eder Millitao and David Alaba to ACL injuries this term.

His excellent domestic form has seemingly carried over to the international stage too as Morocco beat Gabon 5-1 on 15 November.

The 28-year-old didn’t have any direct involvement with the goals but his performances will certainly be making Steidten question whether he made the right decision regarding the defender in the summer.

West Ham United should have kept Nayef Aguerd

Of course, saying West Ham should have kept Aguerd after he’s put in some decent displays for Sociedad this term seems like an easy claim to make.

But, when the fact that the Hammers have been left with just three senior centre-backs in their squad is taken into account, Steidten’s choice to move on Aguerd seems questionable.

As per Sofascore, in the 90 minutes the 28-year-old was on the pitch, he managed to have 45 touches of the ball and maintained a pass accuracy of 87 per cent.

Defensively he was more than solid with the West Ham loanee making two clearances, blocking one shot and making two interceptions.

In terms of duels on the ground and in the air, he failed to win any of those on the floor but aerially, he won 66 per cent.

He did lose possession of the ball five times but when you’re a centre-back, that’s bound to happen. Aguerd also had a shot on goal that went wayward which, for a defender, isn’t all that surprising.

The Hammers have struggled in all areas this term this term but if they’d have kept the Morocco international within their ranks, things could have been a whole lot different, especially if he played with the same form he has shown in La Liga.

In other West Ham news, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been backed to go for the Hammers’ managerial hot seat if Julen Lopetegui is sacked.
