Konstantinos Mavropanos has significant Jean-Phillipe Mateta role to play as record vs West Ham emerges

Konstantinos Mavropanos’ battle against Jean-Phillipe Mateta in West Ham United’s trip to Selhurst Park could decide the game.

The Greek defender has been in excellent form on the attacking end of the pitch, scoring three goals in his last four appearances.

However, when Nuno Espirito Santo’s men travel to Selhurst Park, the 28-year-old will have to impress at the back, as he has also been doing.

The Eagles are fresh off their European exploits, having made the semi-final of the Conference League.

As West Ham gear up to play Crystal Palace, Mateta looks all but set to inflict more damage on the Hammers as he has done on many occasions.

Why West Ham will be fearful of Jean-Phillipe Mateta

Mateta was subbed off by Oliver Glasner in their tie against Fiorentina after 45 minutes, pointing towards the French international starting on Monday night.

The 28-year-old being rested is certainly not a good sign, as the East Londoners have bad memories of facing him.

In six appearances against West Ham, Mateta has managed to net five goals. It is a return that will no doubt be concerning for manager Nuno.

In that essence, Mavropanos will have quite the role to play in dealing with the French striker.

The Greek defender is taller than his partner Axel Disasi and boasts a better aerial duel success rate at 66.7 per cent compared to 65 per cent for the loanee.

Overall, it seems clear that Mavropanos may be in the best position to deal with Mateta compared to the rest of Nuno’s options.

Who will be West Ham’s talisman vs Crystal Palace?

When it comes to who West Ham’s danger could be, it is a toss-up between Pablo and Taty Castellanos.

This season, Crystal Palace have conceded more goals to centre-forwards than any other position, with 11 out of their 36 let in.

This represents a 30 per cent total, and after Castellanos’ two goals against Wolves, he may be in a confident mood to turn up yet again.

Of course, Jarrod Bowen is always a threat for the Irons and has scored in his last two appearances against the Eagles.

While Mateta is a danger, the E20 outfit has its own threats that Glasner must be wary of.

Crystal Palace’s priority looks to be Europe, and that could hand the Irons yet another advantage with Nottingham Forest handing West Ham the same boost in the relegation fight.
