David Moyes one step closer to West Ham United exit as safety net starts to slip away

David Moyes may have edged closer to the exit door at West Ham United following a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.

The Hammers travelled to the Bay Arena to face a side that haven’t lost all season long and appeared to set up to try and not lose, instead of trying to win.

However that didn’t go to plan, after holding out for 83 minutes Jonas Hoffman opened the scoring to put the runaway Bundesliga leaders ahead.

Victor Boniface doubled their lead and only made the uphill task even tougher for the return leg at the London Stadium next week (18 April).

It is safe to say that a fair share of West Ham fans weren’t best pleased by some of their players’ performances and their manager.

Could David Moyes be sacked by West Ham United?

Moyes’ side set up in a five-at-the-back formation in an attempt to try and shut out a proficient attack from Xabi Alonso’s side.

According to FotMob, the home side had 73 per cent possession and turned that into chances as they took 33 shots on goal. This saw them have two big chances which they converted as they took a 2-0 lead away with them.

This is where the frustration begins for West Ham fans as their side only managed to muster one shot across the whole 90. They set up defensively and got battered as wave after wave of Leverkusen attacks came in.

Now the inquest begins into Moyes who has seen many fans come out and be vocal as they want him to depart this summer.

Given the form the Hammers have shown in Europe, the Scot has arguably been kept in a job longer than he may have and provided a safety net.

There is no doubt that he has given fans memories that they will never forget with the Conference League campaign last year. Looking back, a 14th-place finish in the Premier League last season was almost forgotten about due to this.

This season has been partially similar with a positive run in the Europa League covering up some more negative performances.

With that being said, the Hammers do currently sit seventh in the Premier League and not certainly out of Europe.

Moyes has done a good job at the London Stadium but fans may feel he has reached the end of the road.
