Callum Wilson set to sign new West Ham deal, here’s why it’s a shrewd move by David Sullivan

Callum Wilson is set to sign a new one-year deal with West Ham, and stats show every reason as to why it is a smart move by the Hammers.

Back in the winter transfer window, it had seemed Wilson’s fate lay away from London Stadium, with reports that a mutual termination of his contract was being discussed.

However, the Englishman remained and has helped the Irons secure valuable points in the race for survival.

His late winner against Tottenham particularly stands out, with the North London club plunged into the relegation battle alongside the Hammers.

Why Callum Wilson’s contract is a smart move for West Ham

Wilson may not be the first choice at West Ham, but his productivity is one of the highest in E20.

According to Sofascore, out of all the Hammers’ attacking assets, he averages a goal more often than any other player.

With more minutes and appearances under his belt, the English forward may have more than five goals to his name this season.

He only manages 42 minutes per appearance on average.

Wilson has also proved himself to be capable of scoring an array of goals, with just one of his five scored with his favoured right foot. Two have been headers and two have been on his weaker left foot.

He is certainly a quality utility striker, so the Telegraph reporting his contract agreement is great news.

Additionally, if the Irons do get relegated, Wilson would be an excellent option for the Championship, with his experience likely to be a key trait in the second tier.

As seen with Jamie Vardy at Leicester, despite being 37 years old, he was able to guide the Foxes back to the Premier League, contributing to 20 goals.

Overall, the stats show he is a great asset to keep around in the Premier League as well as an excellent insurance option in the event of relegation.

Nuno Espirito Santo must put more trust in Callum Wilson

West Ham would do worse than to put trust in an experienced Premier League striker to pop up with the goals to keep them up.

Nuno Espirito Santo may not trust Wilson as much as he does his other options, but as the scoring frequency shows, he produces far more often than anyone else.

However, there is, of course, the argument that players such as Castellanos offer the chance for others to come into the game.

The Argentine views himself as more of a false nine than a traditional centre-forward. It may be no coincidence that Summerville has been on a goal-scoring run since his arrival.

If it is only a purple patch by the Dutch winger, then Nuno should turn to Wilson in the Hammers’ time of need.
