West Ham United: Sky Sports journalist makes James Ward-Prowse England ‘recall’ prediction
West Ham United midfielder James Ward-Prowse may have to wait for a return to the England squad.
That is according to Sky Sports journalist Dan Long, who made the prediction after Gareth Southgate watched the Hammers draw 2-2 with Burnley.
The two clubs played out the stalemate at the London Stadium on Sunday (10 March), with Ward-Prowse brought off at half-time.
“Kalvin Phillips, James Ward-Prowse and Jarrod Bowen all started for the Hammers – but only two made it into the second half,” Long wrote for Sky Sports. “After a pretty dire team performance in the first half, the former two were hooked at the break, replaced by Michail Antonio and Edson Alvarez.
“Phillips has not enjoyed the best time in East London since his loan move from Man City, though has been a mainstay of Southgate’s squad for the best part of four years.
“Ward-Prowse, however, has not been part of the squad since September 2022 and his wait for a recall may go on.”
Will West Ham ace James Ward-Prowse miss out on the England squad once more?
Ward-Prowse has been hugely impressive for several seasons now, with the midfielder shining at Southampton before their relegation to the Championship last summer.
After losing Declan Rice to Arsenal, the Hammers won the race for his signature last summer, and he has been superb in claret and blue.
The former Saints captain was always going to find it difficult trying to replace Rice, but he has done a fine job, with fellow summer recruit Alvarez helping him out.
Phillips has since been brought in on loan from Manchester City, but he certainly hasn’t had the impact that David Moyes would have hoped.
Despite Ward-Prowse’s form and Phillips’s struggles, Three Lions boss Southgate could still remarkably choose the latter for the upcoming international break.

The England manager has shown that he is willing to select Phillips despite his situation, with the loanee potentially getting the nod over Ward-Prowse for the international meetings with Brazil and Belgium later this month.
